Cycle Tours Around Dorset and Somerset

Synopsis
Dorset and Somerset is one of 20 titles in the new Philip's Cycle Tours series. The series is directly derived from the highly successful Ordnance Survey Cycle Tours series, but has been updated and improved, with a new focus on the needs of cyclists and the cycling market in the 21st century. Each book in the series contains 20 routes, both on-road and off-road, taking you along low-traffic or traffic free roads, tracks and paths. The route takes you through some of the most beautiful countryside and prettiest villages in Britain, and past some of the finest and most interesting houses, churches, castles, gardens and monuments in the land. Dorset and Somerset takes cyclists through a wide variety of delightful countryside, with a good range of grades. The steep moorland of Exmoor gives way to the flat Somerset Levels. Dorset and Thomas Hardy country provide further challenges on the Dorset Downs and good off-road cycling by the coast with magnificent views out to sea.
A unique feature of Philip's Cycle Tours is the superb Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 mapping showing the routes of the rides. This mapping not only gives the detail and clarity you need to follow the route with ease and safety, but allows you to plan short-cuts and detours, to look out for new places of interest, and to become truly involved in the lansdcape you are cycling through. The mapping now shows National Cycle Network routes and National Long-Distance Footpaths. Clear directions are given alongside the mapping, and cross-profile diagrams make planning the pacing of each ride an easy task, even for the beginner. Extra information includes an introduction to the area of the route, nearest railway stations, places of interest with descriptions, guides to refreshment stops, and clear indications of distance, grade and terrain. The books are beautifully and practically designed, with colour photographs throughout the ultra-clear layout. |

Reviewer: Andrew Watson <andrew@omg.org> from the back of a Boeing 767
"Like all the OS/Jarrold Pathfinder guides, this compilation of 28 walks in Dorset is excellent. My only small complaint - some sort of lay-flat binding (a spiral binding perhaps?) would make it easier to use. However, this is true of almost all walking guides. For content and presentation these Jarrold/OS guides can't be beaten. " |

Synopsis
The is the 5th edition of Hidden Places titles exploring Dorset and Hampshire, two counties which are blessed with an impressive coastline and beautiful countryside. Hampshire and the Isle of Wight offer the visitor a wonderful combination of seafaring tradition in the many coastal towns and villages as well as wonderful countryside epitomized by the New Forest and the rolling hills of northeast Hampshire. Both counties are a haven for "hidden places" and the book provides the reader with plenty of interesting historical facts. It is packed with information on the more secluded and little known venues for food, accommodation and places of interest as well as the more enduring attractions of the region. The previous edition has had very favourable reviews from readers - "The book is a marvellous companion for me as I explore the beautiful county of Dorset" - a reader from Poole. "This book is very helpful and interesting" - a reader from Southampton. The attractive cover design incorporates photographs of Lulworth Cove in Dorset, Brightstone, Isle of Wight and Rockboume, Hampshire. |

Synopsis
Local history This is the fourth book in The 'Looking Back' series following 'Ashley Cross' 'Lilliput' and 'Canford Cliffs' Once a wild and desolate place with high sand dunes, gorse and windswept pines, the Sandbanks peninsula forms the entrance to Poole Harbour. Smugglers, wildfowlers and Coastguard Officers gradually gave way to boat builders, ferrymen, ramshackle beach huts and the occasional dwelling before luxurious residences and apartment blocks changed the skyline. The sandy beaches remain but the feeling of freedom and sensation of space amid the sand dunes has gone forever. |
