Night of triumph as the hospitality industry’s unsung heroes take their place in the spotlight

They are often unsung heroes, but they have now received well-deserved recognition for the role they play in BCP’s multi-million pound hospitality business.

Waiters and waitresses, clerical staff – including HR, administration and accounting – as well as maintenance, night staff and kitchen porters were among the roles honored at the company’s second recognition awards. BH Area Hospitality Association (BAHA).

Over 130 nominations were received for this year’s awards which took place at the Hilton Bournemouth on Sunday 2 October.

Tim Seward, President of BAHA – who also received an award for his special contribution to BAHA – said: “These awards were created to bring hotels together, recognize the teams that work there and celebrate all that the industry contributes to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. .

“While not all nominees can be winners or finalists, I want to say a big shout out to every member of staff at every hotel for all they do to welcome visitors and look after their customers.

“Hotels, bed and breakfasts and guesthouses all have such an important role to play in the economy of this region.

“This year the BH Area Hospitality Association has had a strong focus on encouraging young people in schools to consider a career in a hotel.

“We have worked with several schools as well as Bournemouth and Poole College and Bournemouth University to ensure this is high on our agenda.

“As such, it’s great to have several awards recognizing young people who have just started their journey in hospitality and to have Yannic Kaiser, our young ambassador for BAHA, here.”

Cllr Beverley Dunlop, pictured left, Cabinet Member, BCP Council, for Tourism, Culture and Vibrant Places, said: ‘It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be with some of the hardest working people that I know of, to celebrate the best in hospitality, in one of our most important industries.

“I know hospitality is hard work, because I did it.

“Many years ago, at the age of 18, I came from Birmingham to work in what was then one of the finest hotels in Bournemouth.

“I learned tableware, silver service, room service, gastronomy and how to take care of guests.

“I learned other skills which enabled me to work in cafes, bars, pubs and clubs.

“I never forgot those skills, 40 years later I can still set a nice table, serve properly, pull a pint and know how to make a roux and what to do with it!

“These are life skills as well as essential services, for all of us.

“Without hospitality, we simply wouldn’t have a tourism industry.

“There would be nowhere to stay, nowhere to eat, nothing to do but watch the sea.

‘Without you there would be no tourism economy generating £1.1billion a year, boosting the region, supporting jobs, essentially helping to make it a great place to live and work.’

The awards were hosted by Andy Brennan with an Ibiza set – led by DJ Gareth Morrell, Vicky Barents Sax and percussionist John Spencer – opening.

The main sponsor for this year’s awards was Savills with BH Coastal BID as main sponsor.
