Vancouver’s Olympic cauldron will be lit to celebrate Canadian athletes

The iconic Vancouver 2010 Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza will be re-lit on the evening of Friday, February 4 to celebrate Canadian athletes competing in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Vancouver Convention Center and Pavco said the cauldron will be reignited between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. In keeping with tradition, at each Olympic Games the public is invited to visit and enjoy the illumination of the cauldron.

The cauldron will also be re-lit next month on Friday, March 4, 2022, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., to commemorate Canadian athletes competing in the Paralympic Games.

Additionally, a special maple leaf animation on the outdoor Northern Lights roof of BC Place Stadium will mark the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

According to the provincial government, 74 of the 215 Canadian athletes (34%) competing at Beijing 2022 have deep roots in British Columbia, including 34 Olympians who were born or live in the province.

British Columbia also contributed 50% of the 24 medals won by Team Canada at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games.

“The success of each athlete representing Canada is a testament not only to their incredible athleticism, but also to their perseverance and strength of character. They are truly an inspiration to all British Columbians and a testament to the dedication of their coaches, friends and families,” read a joint statement from BC Tourism Minister Melanie Mark and British Columbia Minister of Jobs and Economic Recovery, Ravi Kahlon, who participated in on-court competitions. hockey for Team Canada at Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008.

The Winter Olympics will be held from February 4-20, while the Paralympic Winter Games will be held from March 4-13.
